ASHTANGA VINYASA YOGA

Ashtanga vinyasa yoga is a dynamic and vigorous practice made up of a sequence of positions (asana) linked together between them.

Ashtanga yoga means “eight limbs yoga”, referring to the course indicated by Patanjali on Yoga Sutra, a course to achieve the union with the universal consciousness.

In this method the synchronicity of movements and breathing (vinyasa) is fundamental: breathing connects one position with the next one in an specific order. This synchronization produces an intense warmth inside the body and a great sweat that eliminates toxines of both the muscles and the organs.

A correct practice of Ashtanga Yoga requires to pay attention to three aspects: position, breathing, gaze.

- Position (ASANA): They are classified into six sequences in ascending order of difficulty.
- The first sequence or YOGA CHIKITA detoxifies and straightens the body.
- The second one or YOGA SHODANA purifies the nervous system by opening the energetic channels.
- The remainder four sequences, called advanced series or YOGA STHIRA BHAGA, require a higher level of flexibility.
- The order of asana must be respected, considering that every position serves as a preparation for the next one. What's more, each level must be fully developed before going through the next and difficult one.
- The breathing technique used is called UJJAY PRANAYAMA (the victorious breath), whose attention focuses on the glottis and in which both inspiration and expiration have the same length. The breathing is associated to the BANDHA, the contraction of the muscles of some body parts that permit the circulation of energy.
- DRISHTI is the place in which to direct the gaze, so as to help maintaining the concentration when in the middle of the asana.
- When the practice is constant and has continued for a long period of time, the heat produced will blaze the six poisons around the spiritual heart (desire, anger, desillusion, envy, lust, envy and sloth), revealing the true universally self.
